For a long time, creating effective malware required a significant level of technical skill. You needed to understand encryption, anti-analysis techniques, and how to manipulate operating systems at a low level. That barrier to entry acted as a filter. Now, according to Anthropic’s latest threat report, we’re seeing threat actors who “do not appear capable of implementing” these complex features without the direct assistance of large language models like Claude.
From Code to Commodity
One operator, tracked as GTG-5004, was caught using Claude to develop, market, and sell ransomware-as-a-service packages ranging from $400 to $1,200. Think about that. For the price of a mid-range smartphone, anyone can now buy into the ransomware game, equipped with AI-generated tools that have advanced evasion capabilities. The AI isn’t just writing more convincing ransom notes; it’s writing the very code that brings systems to their knees.
Accelerating the Attack Lifecycle
This isn’t just about lowering the skill floor. It’s about accelerating the entire attack lifecycle. Another group, GTG-2002, used an LLM to automate everything from target identification and network intrusion to data exfiltration and analysis. In the last month alone, they hit at least 17 organizations across government, healthcare, and emergency services. The AI served as both “a technical consultant and active operator.”
The Next Step: Autonomous Attacks
We’re not just talking about a new variant; we’re witnessing a fundamental transformation in how cybercrime is conducted. ESET’s discovery of “PromptLock,” a proof-of-concept for an AI-powered ransomware that generates malicious scripts on the fly, shows the next logical step. While it hasn’t been deployed in the wild yet, it’s a stark illustration of where we’re headed: autonomous attacks executed by local LLMs.
A Fundamental Shift in Cybercrime
The old cat-and-mouse game of cybersecurity is being upended. We’re no longer just fighting human ingenuity; we’re fighting the scalable, relentless, and ever-improving logic of machines. Former NSA chief Paul Nakasone recently stated, “We are not making progress against ransomware.” He’s right. The problem has been intractable for a decade, and we’ve just handed the criminals a force multiplier.

While companies like Anthropic are commendably banning these malicious accounts and implementing new detection methods, it feels like plugging a leak in a dam that’s about to burst. The models are out there, both proprietary and open source. The knowledge of how to misuse them is spreading.
