It was messy, sure, but it was decentralized and it encouraged exploration.

AI summaries shatter that contract. Google is no longer just a directory; it’s positioning itself as the ultimate source. Why bother clicking through to the original article when the AI has already given you the “answer”?

I’m worried we’re optimizing for the wrong thing. We’re so obsessed with the speed of finding an answer that we’re forgetting the value of the search itself. The process of sifting through different sources, comparing perspectives, and synthesizing information is how we learn. By outsourcing that process to an algorithm, we’re not just getting dumber; we’re actively deskilling ourselves.

This isn’t just about publishers losing traffic. It’s about creating a more passive, less critical generation of internet users. It’s about centralizing the flow of information into the hands of a single entity whose primary goal is not to inform, but to keep you engaged within its ecosystem. And that’s a future that I find far from convenient.
